Got to start somewhere. What are you saying? That a program doesn’t work if it doesn’t reach 100% of the people? If Mike’s program can reach a few hundred, that’s a good thing. So what if Mike is an older, white guy. Is there something wrong with that? Maybe you’re prejudiced?

I’ve tried to get some remodeling done on my house and have experienced several people who want my money but don’t want to deliver. Now, I’ve found a man who can only give me one day a week, but he gives me quality work. He has a work ethic — 8 hours work for 8 hours pay — and takes pride in what he does. He has a college degree, but he likes his independence and he doesn’t want somebody telling him to work faster and cut corners. If trade schools could inculcate that sense of pride in a job well done and could train people to do a good job, no matter what that job is, and give a good day’s work there probably wouldn’t be a lot of unemployment. There are no dirty jobs, just people who think that a certain job is beneath them, and there are a lot of people who don’t want to get dirty no matter what it pays.

Just got recruited for a 50k/yr job with bennies. Hard work and ethics DO pay off. Life is what you make it.

By: Paul Topp https://mikerowe.zestsms.com/2013/11/cnn-viewer-has-questions/#comment-369 Thu, 08 May 2014 02:25:00 +0000 http://profoundlydisconnected.com/?p=2386#comment-369 Mike Rowe, you are an American Treasure and you are spot-on in your assessments and in your program to get people trained. As a business owner, I have been amazed at how hard it is to find anyone who is trained to do anything that doesn’t involve a computer screen. And very few that I have hired have much of a work ethic. The schools have really made a mess of things and one of the biggest problems is the lack of vocational training. Not everyone is suited to go to college, just like not everyone can be a good mechanic. All people working for a living should be respected for their efforts–as a very wise young man once told me when I was in the military: “Sgt Topp, the world needs ditch diggers, too.” He had just interrupted me while giving him a hard time for not knowing some advanced electronics concept, and he was pointing out to me that even though he did not have that education, he still worked hard and contributed every day. He was right, and his statement changed the way I look at things forever. We have too many people in the education business that have education degrees and don’t have degrees in the subject that they are teaching, and I think that does a disservice to all. They think that the only successful people will be those with college degrees. But there are so many things that must be done and that have much value that require hard work and training, not classroom education. The system seems like it is set up more to teach students how to pass tests than to actually learn and solve problems. I have worked at the dirty jobs, and the management jobs, and things in between, and there are many days when I wish it was my job to get dirty and feel the accomplishment of physical labor. But I still put in the long days, sometimes finishing the day by cleaning the toilets and vacuuming floors, because that’s what you have to do when you own a small business that in turn employs other people. I have read many of the comments below, and to all of you, I say to re-look at what Mr. Rowe is trying to do, and get behind him. There are over 160 different Federal Jobs and Training programs, and they have not been able and will never be able to accomplish what Mike’s going to do. I hope that “JB” takes a look at the preceding discussion and learns that talking points are not what life is all about–thinking for yourself and developing solutions to problems goes much further than mouthing someone else’s beliefs. I miss Dirty Jobs too. Might actually have to force myself to turn CNN on for the first time in years…Thank you again Mike Rowe!

Look up auto manufacturing assembly line workers openings in Michigan. TheFord Chicago assembly plant cannot keep the new hires they recruit exactly for the reasons Mike brings up: it’s too hot, it’s too hard, they expect too much, I have other stuff to do rather then work the 12 hours a day this place wants. Ford has resorted to hiring people on work release sporting gang tattoos. People have walked out because they didn’t feel safe working next to a thug. But they are forced to keep hiring them because no one else will apply. And new hires sometimes walk out in groves on an especially hot day.

They start at roughly $18 per hours with PLENTY of overtime. You won’t be told you can’t do the job cuz you’re a woman, in fact they are most likely try to put you on the most physical job in the plant to try to break you. But you will make the same as the guy you hired in with. The jobs suck, you won’t be respected, you’ll be treated like an warm body because that’s all you are to them. And they have every intention to break your body down so you don’t advance to far up the seniority ranks and cost then more than the next new hire. Come in, work your fingers to the view and get out. You’re adisposable piece of tissue.

But… they’re out there. Detroit, Chicago, Louisville and Kansas City Ford pants. Can’t speak for the other auto manufactures but they are all one in the same. Right now, the cost of housing in parts of the north (specifically the Detroit) is dirt cheap. If you’ve sold everything, then it wouldn’t cost to move what’s left of your belongings.
Good luck.

I was not juding or attack you. I was trying to show you that the world is still at your finger tips. Here, lets start this all over…

If you could choose any company in the world that you’d like to work for, that is doing something you are passionate about, what company would you choose?

Where are you currently working?

Let’s see if we can get from A to B.

We have the exact same problem here which is why I went on my rant. I want to know where those training courses went to was well. I’ve been looking and can’t find them in larger metropolitan areas. What’s more annoying is that many of the salaries for those jobs have dropped too.

I was a pharmacy technician for four years and then the state starting tacking on fees while employers stopped reimbursement for everything. Pay dropped to $10/hr from $13/hr on average. They’re now upping the ante on certification qualifications and making an Associate’s “degree” mandatory. All of the jobs you mention have seen wages drop, and I’ve witnessed some first hand.

The “victim” crap is not what I was ranting about so I’ll clarify. My generation is simultaneously getting screwed over by old people who offer abysmal wages while calling us “lazy”. I have no problem with working or being a productive citizen of my country. However, it’s becoming increasingly apparent that YOUR generation is seriously out of touch with the realities of those coming into the workforces decades after you.

We have to learn more in a shorter time (I had ten week quarters not semesters), work longer hours for less pay, deal with inflation, more bills than your generation, and yes, higher taxes. We have to compete on a GLOBAL scale while your generation competed against the neighbors. Spare me your lecture you uninformed senior citizen.

Personally I think it’s not just about degrees anymore, it’s how well one communicates and works with others in addition to the skills they bring to the table. Congrats on your success and your husband’s success. I wish you all the best!
